Over the past couple of years, I’ve stumbled around trying to find my voice and articulate my position on a plethora of topics. Chief among them is my rather passionate view of how the people of God should engage our culture. My thesis, though never entirely clear I’m afraid, was that we do so as citizens of a Kingdom that is not of this world.

I have just read the best treatment on the subject I’ve ever run across, and since I haven’t been able to manage to say it this poignantly, I felt obliged to share this piece. It is fantastic. It’s what I’ve been meaning to say and it’s said so well.

  1. Good stuff Titus. Thanks for sharing. This is the kind of stuff I pray about. This is the stuff that keeps me up at night. This is the kind of stuff that sends people (American) people into a religious rage. I’m so grateful for leaders that will point us to the truth. I don’t want to get lost in Americanism. I want to get lost in Jesus. And they are not the same thing.

  2. Titus,

Thank you for sharing this article. what Russell Moore writes about is helping me to define what is inside of my head that I have had trouble putting into words. I remember getting an email years ago that sounded very religious and American (read God and Country). What always bothered me about the email was that it had an image of Jesus superimposed on the American flag. I really don’t think that our country can save us – only Jesus can. We all need Jesus – we are all lost on our own. God does not look at us see the flag of our country. Once we are saved he looks at us and sees only his Son – Jesus and his righteousness. We are saved and forgiven because of what Jesus did for us – not what our country does for us.

I believe the “father of all lies” is deliberately trying to deceive us and divert our attentions away from what truly matters – our Fathers Kingdom. he is trying to mislead us by telling us that it is good to be more passionate about things other than about Jesus Christ, like country, family, sports, music, work and so on. There is nothing wrong with any of these until they take up more time and become more important than our Savior – Jesus Christ and I believe that is what is happening in our country today. DON’T BELIEVE THE LIE!

My allegiance is to Jesus, My God, first, all else is second including me.
